Fulcrum & Fastned relationship continues with partnership to power biggest ultra-rapid charging station in Scotland

Fulcrum, the leading independent net-zero focused multi-utility infrastructure and services provider, is continuing to support the roll out of Fastned’s ultra-rapid EV charging network with a new charging station in Hamilton – currently the biggest in Scotland.
Located at the Palace Grounds Retail Park in Hamilton, the new charging station features eight ultra-rapid charging bays, with the new electrical infrastructure powering the site being designed, built and installed by Fulcrum.
To provide EV charging on the site, Fulcrum designed and built a bespoke 11kV substation, taking electricity from the Scottish Power Energy Network (SPEN), connected to a 1500kVA transformer that feeds the 300kW charge points.
Currently, the charging station can charge eight EVs concurrently, but Fulcrum has future-proofed the capacity of the infrastructure to enable the location to be extended to support up to 12 ultra-rapid bays in future.
Acting as Independent Connections Provider (ICP) to Fastned, Fulcrum has delivered the infrastructure to power the charging station from initial design through to construction. Works began earlier this year, with the site being energised within project timescales.
This is the second EV charging station powered by Fulcrum on behalf of Fastned, which is building a European network of charging stations. Fulcrum’s first for Fastned was in Sandwich, near Dover in Kent.
Antony Collins, chief executive of Fulcrum, said: “This charging station is an important part of growing the UK’s EV charging network and continues our excellent relationship with Fastned to provide future-proofed infrastructure that will meet the growing demand for EV charging.
“As a provider of energy infrastructure to power the UK’s net-zero future, including EV charging, Fulcrum brings extensive expertise in design, build and installation that enables companies like Fastned to increase their network of charging stations. This will give confidence to motorists as they make the switch to EVs that they can charge and enjoy their cars on journeys around the UK.”
Tom Hurst, UK Lead for Fastned, said: “Fastned’s mission is to accelerate the transition to sustainable mobility by giving freedom to electric drivers. Our new station in Hamilton is another important milestone on the way to realising that mission, as we look to build a network of 1,000 EV charging stations across Europe. Working with proactive and experienced partners is essential if we are to achieve that goal and we were delighted to work with Fulcrum once again.”
