Supporting “Stay at Home”
In this unprecedented time, and in line with the Government’s 23 March “Stay at Home” advice, we are taking our responsibility to safeguard the wellbeing of our field-based people and the communities they work in seriously, by immediately postponing the delivery of all non-essential utility connection and infrastructure works.
We understand and appreciate the importance of delivering these planned works for our valued customers and this is not a decision we have taken lightly, but we are confident that we have done the responsible thing to ensure the safety of our people, our customers and our communities.
Customers with planned or ongoing works affected by this will be contacted directly and our teams will remain in close contact with them to provide updates and plans for delivering works as the situation develops.
We thank our customers for their patience, understanding and cooperation at this difficult time.
Continuity of essential services provided by us
Our office-based people have been working effectively from home since 17 March, with no impact on productivity or service to customers and will continue to do so.
The essential services that we provide will continue to be delivered on a business as usual basis through our team of Key Workers. These services are:
- Works associated with the ownership, maintenance or repair of the gas and electricity utility networks we own and operate
- Essential meter maintenance provided by our Smart Metering Business
- The electrical maintenance and repair services provided by Maintech Power; and
- All essential new utility connections to critical infrastructure or developments, such as hospitals and critical generation plants
Emergencies and safety related service provision
I want to reassure our customers and the public that we remain fully resourced and available for all emergency and safety related work on gas and electricity networks and meters.
Enhanced emergency services to critical sites:
To do our part and to support the nation as best as we can during this challenging time, we are now also delivering an enhanced and prioritised emergency service provision to sites providing critical services such as hospitals, food manufacturing plants, electricity generation sites and medical research facilities.
We are also providing free of charge, proactive electrical inspection services to these sites to ensure that we further protect the critical infrastructure that powers the UK’s most crucial services at this time.
A huge thank you goes to our teams of Key Workers who are doing an incredible job, under unprecedented circumstances, to enable us to provide this service.
Our Key Worker field-based engineers continue to follow all strict hygiene measures from the Government and Public Health bodies, as part of our existing stringent health and safety procedures, to ensure they can undertake works while keeping themselves and the public safe.
We will continue to follow Government advice and respond to this evolving situation with true Fulcrum spirit. The team and I would like to thank our customers, our people, and our partners for their incredible resilience, hard work and support during these challenging times.
We promise to always do the right thing for our customers, our people and the communities we work in as the COVID-19 situation develops.
